Your Comfort Zone is Keeping You Small

From the desk of Katie Humphrey, a Featured Partner of The SWAT Institute:

“I could NEVER do that!”

“What would people think?”

“I can’t go through that again!”

Have you ever had any of the above thoughts? I know I have…and so have you. It’s in our nature to want to stay in our comfort zone. Protected. Safe. Away from danger, harm or disappointment.

But I have some unfortunate news for you. That comfort zone of yours – the one keeping you so safe – is also the reason why you don’t have the life you want!

That’s right. The healthy, fit body you’ve always dreamed of (but feel is impossible to achieve), the relationships that leave you energized and fulfilled, the passionate career, business or hobby you want so badly, the finances that keep your life comfortable, the time and energy you need to make a difference and impact others’ lives. All of this is waiting for you…outside of your comfort zone.

I always tell my clients to draw an open circle on a piece of paper. That’s you. Then I say to draw a small dot about an inch outside of the circle. That’s the goal you’re after. It’s outside of your comfort zone. And you must stretch yourself – mentally, emotionally, and sometimes physically, to achieve it.

Your comfort zone stretches and expands as you do. Think of a time when you were SO afraid of doing something, yet now you do it all the time. It’s like second nature – it’s so easy for you now. For me, this was driving a car, being in a “steady” relationship, speaking in front of large audiences, eating healthily, and being on camera. At one point, all of those things were foreign to me; scary, even. Now, they are all part of my daily life that I hardly have to think before I do any of them.

Staying small and safe may feel good on some level. But if you feel unsatisfied in any way right now, it’s because you’re lying to yourself. You know that deep down you’re meant to be doing something greater. You’re meant to do something that scares you. I once had a great mentor tell me that “whatever you fear the most is likely the thing that will bring you the most joy, abundance and success.” Boy, was she right.

That comfort zone of yours, in my opinion, is preventing you from succeeding in every area of your life. And this is your only chance at life! If you think about it from that standpoint, then we’ve got no time to waste. The time is NOW to do something and create the results you want.

Take some time, right now, and decide where you’re staying small and allowing your comfort zone to dictate what you do and don’t do in your life. Ask yourself, “Is this really how I want to live?”

Don’t let time/money/energy excuses rob you from living the great, passionate, healthy and fulfilled life you deserve. Make a decision today to expand – on every level – and truly start living.
